Mauricio Pochettino's US return is risky, expensive, and probably unnecessary, yet US Soccer has doubled down on the Argentine coach with a contract through 2030. After a successful first cycle that saw the USMNT reach the World Cup round of 16, the decision to retain Pochettino raises questions about ambition, cost, and long-term strategy.
Why Pochettino's First USMNT Stint Was a Success
Pochettino took over in September 2024 and immediately injected energy into a team that had stagnated. He implemented a system that maximized the talents of a generation of players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie. The 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay in the World Cup group stage was a historic high, showcasing the team's potential under his guidance.

Despite the disappointing 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16, Pochettino's overall record was positive. He won 70% of his matches and improved the team's tactical discipline. The USMNT looked organized, aggressive, and capable of competing with top-tier nations—a marked improvement from previous cycles.
The Financial Burden of Keeping Pochettino
Pochettino's new deal is reportedly worth $8 million per year, making him one of the highest-paid national team coaches in the world. This investment comes at a time when US Soccer is also funding a new youth development program and hosting the 2026 World Cup. The opportunity cost is significant: those funds could be used to improve infrastructure, scouting, or coaching education at the grassroots level.
Moreover, the contract runs through 2030, which means US Soccer is committed to Pochettino even if results decline. If the team struggles in qualifying or at the 2026 World Cup, the federation would face a difficult decision: pay a massive buyout or stick with a coach who may have lost the dressing room.
Is Pochettino's Return Unnecessary?
Critics argue that Pochettino's return is unnecessary because he has already achieved the main goal: stabilizing the team and creating a clear identity. The next step in the USMNT's evolution could be led by a younger, cheaper coach who can build on that foundation with fresh ideas. Names like Jesse Marsch or even an internal promotion from the youth ranks could provide continuity at a fraction of the cost.
Furthermore, Pochettino's track record at club level suggests he may not stay for the full cycle. He left Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea under various circumstances, often due to disagreements with management or a desire for a new challenge. If a top European club comes calling mid-cycle, the USMNT could be left scrambling for a replacement.

Key Takeaways from the Pochettino Decision
- Pochettino's return ensures stability but at a high financial cost.
- The 2030 contract may limit flexibility if results falter.
- Opportunity costs could hamper youth development initiatives.
- Pochettino's club ambitions may lure him away mid-contract.
- Alternative coaches could offer similar results for less money.
What This Means for the USMNT's Future
With Pochettino at the helm, the USMNT has a clear direction and a proven leader. However, the risk is that the team becomes overly dependent on one man's tactics and personality. The federation must ensure that Pochettino is fully committed and that there is a succession plan in place should he leave early.
Ultimately, the decision to bring Pochettino back is a bet on continuity over innovation. It may pay off if he delivers a deep run in 2026 or 2030, but the cost and uncertainty make it a gamble that many believe is unnecessary.
