Classic DIY Garden Bench: Detailed Build Guide 2026

This luxurious garden bench requires cutting, shaping, joining, routing, and carving more than you might imagine: it's a project reserved for the most skilled and best-equipped DIYers. Our DIY bench, with a seat length of 1300 mm, consists of four parts to be built separately and joined together once completed:

• The seat, which is the simplest part,
• The backrest, a bit more complicated,
• The two side pieces that truly test the maker's skill, combining legs and armrests into one piece.

The long feet are extensions of the armrest uprights, tapered, decorated with a router, and enriched with half-round moldings; such feet, equipped with dowel attachments, are among the most common and easy-to-find semi-finished parts.

How to Design an Outdoor Bench

Designing a garden bench involves careful planning of dimensions, wood selection, and joinery. For this project, home improvement tools and materials are essential for precise cuts and assembly.

What You Need to Build a DIY Garden Bench (Numbers Refer to the Drawing)

The following are the gross dimensions of red cedar boards from which the various pieces are obtained. Measurements are in mm.

• 4 boards 38x190x880 (1) to be paired with 4 boards 26x190x880 (2), for the armrest uprights. From the 26x190x880 boards, also obtain 10 backrest slats (8) and 16 seat support wedges (13);
• 6 boards 26x110x388 (3) to be joined to form the armrest;
• 16 boards 26x500x140 from which to obtain the armrest slats (4) and 16 backrest slats (8).

Freehand Routing or with a Guide

Routing the decorative profiles on the legs and armrests can be done freehand or using a guide for consistency. A router and guide system from our home improvement collection will help achieve professional results.

Challenging Legs, But Also Semi-Finished

The legs are tapered and feature routed details. Pre-made semi-finished legs with dowel attachments simplify the build. For a sturdy foundation, consider garden supplies like wood preservatives and fasteners.

Shaped Armrest with a Grand Curl

The armrest features an elegant curved profile. This requires careful shaping with a jigsaw and router. To complete the look, outdoor patio furniture cushions and accessories can be added for comfort.

The Curved Armrest Slats

The slats under the armrest are curved to match the design. Use a bending form or steam bending for accuracy. For lighting the bench area, outdoor lighting from GrandGoldman enhances evening use.

Completing the Sides

Assemble the legs, armrest, and slats into one side piece. Repeat for the other side, ensuring mirror symmetry. Wall decor ideas can inspire matching garden ornaments.

Preparing the Seat

The seat consists of several slats with gaps for drainage. Attach support wedges underneath. For a complete outdoor setup, BBQ grills and outdoor cooking supplies make the garden a social hub.

The Backrest

The backrest slats are angled for comfort. Secure them to a top rail and bottom support. Outdoor decor like planters or rugs can tie the bench into your garden design.
