Sometimes you don't need a treehouse; just transform a simple bed into a DIY Montessori bed, an exclusive space for your child to feel protected, yet free to imagine and play, so they don't see it only as a place to be relegated for sleep. That's exactly what Corrado Bartolucci undertook with this simple yet effective project, for which he only needed some planed spruce strips 40×20 mm, which he joined in the shape of a house by screwing them overlapping onto the legs of his granddaughter's bed.

The construction is very simple, but you need to pay great attention to the finish, rounding all edges so that in the DIY Montessori bed there are no parts that could hurt the child. This involves not only routing the edges of the strips but also sanding the surfaces, applying a couple of coats of water-based transparent wood preservative, with additional sanding in between.
Materials and Tools You'll Need
- Planed spruce strips 40×20 mm (length as per your bed size)
- Wood glue (vinyl adhesive)
- Wood screws
- Water-based transparent wood preservative
- Router or sander for rounding edges
- Miter saw for angled cuts
- Drill and bits
- Clamps
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Strips
Purchase planed spruce strips with a section of 40×20 mm. Since they have sharp edges, the first thing to do is pass them through a router to round them. Do this with the machine in a static position, mounted under a workbench. Cut the strips to project size using a miter saw, keeping in mind that the ends must be cut at a 60° angle, so that the strips form a 120° angle with each other.
2. Mark and Drill
Adjust a marking gauge to mark a certain distance from the edge (about 15 mm), then draw a line parallel to each end with the angled cut. Make two holes in a scrap piece of strip, turning it into a template to correctly define the position for the holes for the screws that will fix the third strip. The correct position is predictable based on your bed dimensions.
3. Assemble the House Frame
The fixings between the strips that form the house of the DIY Montessori bed are done simply by gluing together the pieces that form 120° angles and putting screws to fix the longitudinal strips that connect to the vertices of each angle. For each corner there are two screws, applied to make the junction of the two angled strips absolutely secure, made only with vinyl adhesive.
4. Attach to the Bed
Once the house frame is assembled, attach it to the legs of your child's existing bed using screws. Make sure everything is level and secure. For a sturdy base, consider pairing this project with a quality bed frame from GrandGoldman to ensure safety and durability.
5. Sand and Finish
Sand all surfaces thoroughly, then apply two coats of water-based transparent wood preservative, with light sanding between coats. This will protect the wood and keep it smooth for your child's delicate skin.

Yes, you can adapt this design to most standard toddler or single beds. For best results, start with a sturdy bed frame that matches your child's room decor.
What tools do I need for rounding edges?
A router is ideal for quickly rounding edges, but you can also use sandpaper or a sanding block for smaller projects. Always prioritize safety when using power tools.
