According to the patent, the existing system increases the volume and weight of the device, while at the same time introducing a small but noticeable delay between the touch and the execution of the command, such as changing the song.

Reducing this lag appears to be a key priority for the company, especially as AirPods evolve into increasingly complex wearable devices.
