The US Soccer federation faces a pivotal moment as the US men's national team exits the World Cup with key leadership gaps, including the uncertain future of head coach Mauricio Pochettino and the vacant sporting director position. These developments raise questions about the strategic direction of the program.
Pochettino's Contract and Donor Funding
Mauricio Pochettino's contract, which was partially funded by billionaire donors, ends with the conclusion of the World Cup. US Soccer CEO JT Batson confirmed that discussions are ongoing, but no immediate resolution is expected. “We are going to take a break after the World Cup and rest and recuperate,” Batson said, adding that Pochettino and his staff have been active in long-term planning, including involvement in U-23 role discussions with Steve Cherundolo.

The Sporting Director Vacancy
In April, Matt Crocker resigned as sporting director to take a similar role in Saudi Arabia. Batson emphasized that the federation relies on a workforce of over 600 people rather than a single figurehead. Both Batson and COO Dan Helfrich declined to clarify whether a new sporting director would be among upcoming hires. Helfrich noted that key figures like Oguchi Onyewu, Barry Pauwels, Tracey Kevins, and Emma Hayes are part of strategic discussions.
