The World Cup has delivered another gut-wrenching chapter for England fans, as the team’s best chance since 1966 ended in a painful exit. After a tournament filled with highs and lows, questions linger about squad selection, tactical decisions, and the future of English football under manager Thomas Tuchel.
How Does This England Squad Rank Historically?
When comparing this England squad to previous World Cup teams, many analysts rank it as the strongest since the 1966 champions. The 2018 semi-finalists in Russia were impressive, but this group boasts deeper talent in midfield and attack. However, defensive frailties and a lack of cutting edge in big moments proved costly once again.

As one fan noted, “Croatia in 2018 runs it close, but this team and squad are better in most departments – maybe not all across the defence.” The sentiment captures the frustration: England had the tools but couldn’t finish the job.
Key Omissions That Sparked Debate
Tuchel’s squad choices raised eyebrows, with notable absentees including Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Adam Wharton, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Fans questioned why players like Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze were preferred over more proven options. The reluctance to use substitutes like Kobbie Mainoo and Ollie Watkins only deepened the criticism.
| Player Omitted | Reason Given | Fan Sentiment |
|---|---|---|
| Cole Palmer | Injury concerns | Should have been included |
| Phil Foden | Form dip | Missed his creativity |
| Adam Wharton | Inexperience | Better than some selected |
| Trent Alexander-Arnold | Tactical fit | World-class talent wasted |
Was This England’s Last Chance?
While the defeat feels like the end of an era, the future is not bleak. England’s youth academies continue producing top talent, giving the team a head start on many rival nations. However, the core of Harry Kane, Declan Rice, and Kyle Walker may not have another tournament together. As one fan put it, “The post-Kane era isn’t really one I want to contemplate!”
Key Takeaways from England’s World Cup Campaign
- England’s squad depth is the best since 1966, but tactical rigidity held them back.
- Omissions of creative players like Foden and Palmer limited attacking options.
- Tuchel’s reluctance to use substitutes mirrored previous tournament failures.
- The defense, while solid, lacked the pace to handle top counter-attacking teams.
- England’s future remains bright, but the window for this generation is closing.
