Alan Jones Trial: 2GB Hosts Called Journalists 'Pigs' in Texts 2026

In the ongoing Alan Jones trial, a Sydney court heard that Jones and fellow 2GB host Jason Morrison frequently referred to the Sydney Morning Herald and its chief investigative reporter Kate McClymont as “pigs in the media.” The revelation came as Morrison faced accusations of tailoring his evidence about an alleged assault to protect his friend Jones.

Text Messages Reveal Disdain for Media

Prosecutor Georgina Wright read a text message Morrison sent to Jones in 2020 when Jones announced his retirement from 2GB, then owned by Nine Entertainment. The message read: “Thank Christ you’re getting out [of Nine Entertainment]. Let them fall into a bag of shit.” Wright highlighted the text to demonstrate Morrison’s hostility toward the media outlet.

Judge Glenn Walsh allowed the prosecution to cross-examine Morrison after tendering evidence of text messages where Morrison referred to the SMH and McClymont as “pigs.” The judge’s ruling came after Morrison’s testimony about an alleged assault at a lower north shore restaurant was called into question.

Background of the Case

Police formed Strike Force Bonnefin after reporting in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in 2023 led to alleged victims coming forward. Jones was arrested in November 2024 and has pleaded not guilty to 20 charges of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching against six complainants.

Key Evidence and Allegations

The court heard that Morrison’s text messages were part of a pattern of derogatory comments about the media. Wright asked Morrison about his disdain for the SMH, suggesting it influenced his testimony. Morrison denied tailoring his evidence, but the prosecution argued otherwise.

Implications for the Trial

The cross-examination of Morrison is significant because it could undermine the defence’s credibility. If the judge finds Morrison tailored his evidence, it may affect the jury’s perception of Jones’s defence. Legal experts note that such text messages could be used to show bias or motive.

Reaction from the Media and Public

The case has drawn intense media scrutiny, with many outlets covering the trial. The term “pigs in the media” has sparked debate about the relationship between shock jocks and journalists. Public opinion is divided, with some supporting Jones and others condemning his alleged actions.

• Text messages show hostility toward SMH and McClymont
• Morrison accused of tailoring evidence to protect Jones
• Trial continues with cross-examination of key witnesses
• Jones denies all charges

What’s Next in the Trial?

The trial is expected to continue for several weeks, with more witnesses and evidence to be presented. The prosecution will likely use the text messages to challenge the defence’s narrative. Jones’s legal team will have the opportunity to cross-examine prosecution witnesses and present their own evidence.

Expert Analysis

Legal analysts suggest that the text messages could be a turning point in the trial. If the jury views Morrison as unreliable, it could cast doubt on other aspects of the defence. However, the defence may argue that the messages were taken out of context and do not reflect Morrison’s testimony.
