The Bondi library book removal of 'How to Sell a Genocide' has ignited a fierce debate over censorship, community sensitivities, and the role of public libraries in Australia. The decision by Waverley Council to pull the book from shelves after a complaint from a survivor of the Bondi beach terror attack has drawn criticism from the author and free speech advocates.
Background of the Book Removal
Waverley Library at Bondi Junction, part of the same council area as Bondi beach, removed the book after a complaint. The council outsources its book curation, meaning the selection was not made by council officers. The book, written by Adam Johnson, critiques US media coverage of the Gaza conflict and argues that Israel's actions constitute genocide.

The complaint came from a survivor of the December antisemitic attack at Bondi, where 15 people were killed. The survivor saw the book on the "new release / hot item" shelf and expressed distress on Facebook. The council stated the book was removed for review and promised closer oversight of book selection.
Author's Defense and Free Speech Concerns
Author Adam Johnson defended the book, stating that calling Israel's actions in Gaza a genocide is not a fringe position but a consensus among human rights experts. He questioned whether pro-Israel books would also be removed if they upset other community members. Johnson emphasized that the term "genocide" is not his own finding but a mainstream conclusion among those who study such matters.

| Protects survivors and bereaved families from distress | Violates free speech and intellectual freedom |
| Library should be sensitive to community trauma | Book selection should be based on merit, not political pressure |
