A Brisbane child accused of stabbing a fellow student was allegedly subjected to months of racist abuse and threats, a court has heard. The 16-year-old appeared in the Richlands children’s court on Wednesday, facing charges for an attack that left a 17-year-old schoolmate with life-threatening injuries. The case highlights the devastating intersection of school violence and racial harassment in Australia.
Details of the Alleged Stabbing Incident
Police prosecutor Sgt Shane Stephenson described the incident as “extremely serious and concerning” and alleged it was premeditated. The victim suffered wounds to the right side of his lower back and torso, causing damage to his liver and internal bleeding. Stephenson told the court the attack may have been motivated by a social media post, calling it “completely disproportionate to any perceived insult.”

Defense Claims of Racist Bullying
Defense lawyer Torik Dib argued the child had been bullied for months on social media and in person. He read out messages in court that showed the defendant’s family being abused on ethnic grounds. “There are a number of children at a particular school of a particular background, and those people have been on social media, online, and in person, harassing and intimidating the applicant,” Dib said. Magistrate Mark Howden described the messages as “threatening and racist.”
