The Divine Playhouse, a former church turned LGBTQ+ arts venue in Sydney, is exploring legal action after its landlord ordered it to stop engaging in what it calls 'offensive trade.' This comes after religious groups protested the venue's opening night, sparking a culture war over queer-friendly performances.
Background of the Divine Playhouse Dispute
The venue is housed inside a deconsecrated church in Sydney’s central business district, which has operated as a theatre since the 1930s. Organizers, led by Heaps Gay Events, intended the pop-up as a safe and inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community. However, protesters claimed the performances mocked religious faith.

In a breach notice, lawyers for landlord KCSYD Pty Ltd stated that the trade 'insulted and mocked the sincerely held religious beliefs of millions of Christian Australians.' The venue’s founder, Kat Dopper, maintains the venue acted in good faith and is committed to meeting tenant obligations while exploring legal options.
Legal and Financial Challenges Ahead
Dopper said the venue now faces significant operational, legal, and financial challenges. The year-long lease was set to support Sydney’s creative sector, but the eviction notice has forced cancellations of planned events. 'The arts have always been a place where people ask difficult questions,' Dopper stated, emphasizing the importance of artistic freedom.
