Southport Killer Moved to Broadmoor: Families’ Lawyer Speaks Out 2026

The Southport killer Axel Rudakubana, who was sentenced to life for the murders of three young girls, has been transferred from Belmarsh prison to Broadmoor hospital. The families' lawyer, Chris Walker, has voiced deep concerns that Rudakubana is actively trying to retraumatise the victims' families from his cell, especially as the two-year anniversary of the attack approaches.

Background of the Southport Killer Case

On 29 July 2024, Rudakubana, then 17, attacked a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport. He killed Alice da Silva Aguiar (9), Bebe King (6), and Elsie Dot Stancombe (7), and attempted to murder eight other children and two adults. The attack sparked far-right riots across the UK. In 2025, he received a life sentence with a minimum of 52 years.

The Transfer to Broadmoor

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Rudakubana was moved to the high-security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor because he could not be managed safely in prison. A spokesperson emphasised that the transfer does not change his sentence. However, the families were only informed via a letter on 22 July, without details on why the transfer occurred.

Lawyer’s Concerns

Chris Walker, representing the three bereaved families, told BBC Breakfast: “It’s a deep concern of mine that this is a pattern starting to develop by him trying to retraumatise the families from his cell, and it’s a deep concern that this is going to occur every anniversary.” He highlighted the lack of transparency: “With the vacuum of information, the concern is that he’s manipulating the situation to his own benefit.”
