Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, has resigned to join Andy Burnham's new government, a move that rivals have called opportunistic and hypocritical. The prime minister appointed Sarwar as a peer and minister at the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, just months after Sarwar led his party to its worst Holyrood result in history. This sudden departure has left many within Scottish Labour reeling and has sparked fierce criticism from opposition parties.
Sarwar's Controversial Move
The decision to resign as Scottish Labour leader and accept a seat in the House of Lords marks a dramatic reversal for Sarwar, who previously called the institution "unacceptable" in 2022. Scottish Green Party co-leader Gillian Mackay labeled him a "chancer," noting that he spent years attacking the very institution he now joins. The SNP has called for Sarwar to donate his new ministerial salary to charity, accusing him of lying to the electorate.
