Andy Burnham's first cabinet appointments have been announced, with the new prime minister rewarding loyalists and shaking up the top team. The reshuffle includes a surprise Chancellor pick and a clearout of Starmer allies, signaling a shift toward a more inclusive but decisive administration.
Key Cabinet Appointments
The most notable appointment is John Healey as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Healey, a former defence secretary and long-serving MP since 1997, was a surprising choice over frontrunners Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood. His background includes stints under Blair, Brown, Miliband, Corbyn, and Starmer, making him a unifying figure. Healey resigned under Starmer over defence funding, and now will push for a fuller settlement for the MoD.

Home Secretary: Shabana Mahmood
Mahmood, who was widely expected to take the Treasury, instead becomes Home Secretary. She brings a strong legal background and has been a loyal Burnham supporter. Her appointment signals a focus on law and order and immigration reform.
Who Is Out?
Several allies of former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have been removed from their roles. The clearout includes members of the right wing of the party, as Burnham aims to build a cabinet that reflects all wings of Labour.
