Andy Burnham has appointed his first Labour cabinet, marking a significant shift in UK politics as the new prime minister rewards loyalists and reshapes the government. This cabinet reshuffle reflects his promise to build a more inclusive administration while executing a brutal clearout of Starmer allies.
Who Is In: Key Appointments in Burnham's Cabinet
John Healey has been named Chancellor of the Exchequer in a surprise move. The former defence secretary, who resigned under Starmer over defence funding, brings decades of experience as an MP since 1997 and a Treasury minister under Tony Blair. Healey's loyalty across Labour factions—from Blair-Brown years to Corbyn and Starmer—makes him a steady choice for the role.

What This Means for UK Politics
Burnham's first cabinet reflects a balancing act between rewarding loyalty and projecting inclusivity. The inclusion of Healey—a figure respected across factions—may help stabilise the party after a divisive leadership contest. However, the clearout of Starmer allies risks alienating some centrist voters.
With a focus on reindustrialisation and defence spending, Burnham's cabinet signals a shift toward economic nationalism and stronger military commitments. This could reshape Labour's policy platform ahead of future elections.
