The Cyclospora outbreak linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce has prompted a massive recall across 27 states, with Taylor Farms removing shredded iceberg lettuce from its Guanajuato, Mexico facility due to potential Cyclospora contamination. Cases of cyclosporiasis continue rising in the US, and health officials warn that more products may be implicated in the coming days.
What Is Cyclospora and How Does It Spread?
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes intestinal illness when ingested. It embeds in fresh produce, especially leafy greens like iceberg lettuce, and can survive washing if water sources are contaminated. The infection, known as cyclosporiasis, leads to watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea, often lasting weeks if untreated.
