Enzo Maresca's Quest for the New Rodri at Manchester City 2026

Enzo Maresca is searching for the 'new Rodri' at Manchester City, embracing the challenge of replacing a Ballon d'Or winner. The Italian manager remains unfazed by Rodri's £65m departure to Barcelona, drawing parallels to past transitions like Sergio Agüero to Erling Haaland. As City prepare for their Premier League opener against Bournemouth, Maresca's confidence in the club's recruitment strategy is clear.

The Challenge of Replacing Rodri

Rodri's exit leaves a significant void in Manchester City's midfield. The Spanish international, who won the Ballon d'Or and Champions League during his tenure, was considered one of the world's best defensive midfielders. Maresca, however, insists that the club has a proven track record of finding successors. He referenced how Kevin De Bruyne replaced David Silva and how Haaland filled Agüero's shoes.

"When they leave, you need to be good at recruiting the next one," Maresca said. "It is normal, it is change, it is not a problem." This philosophy underscores City's long-term planning and ability to adapt.

Maresca's Transfer Philosophy

The manager emphasized that no player is bigger than the club. "If he is not happy, he is not going to perform in the right way," he stated, confirming that Rodri's desire to leave was respected. This approach mirrors Pep Guardiola's stance, ensuring a harmonious squad environment.

City's recruitment team is now tasked with identifying a midfielder who can replicate Rodri's defensive solidity and distribution. The search is on, and Maresca is confident the right candidate will emerge.
