European football associations are withdrawing support for Gianni Infantino as pressure intensifies on the FIFA president's controversial re-election bid. The Football Association, along with Wales and Serbia, has officially dropped its endorsement, signaling a major shift in global football governance.
Why European FAs Are Turning Against Infantino
The breaking point stems from Infantino's failed plan to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme. This initiative drew widespread criticism for lacking transparency and undermining football's integrity.

The FA, which previously supported Infantino, now calls for a full and robust review of FIFA's leadership and governance. The Welsh FA echoed this sentiment, stating that Infantino has lost confidence due to failures in good governance, processes, and stakeholder management.
Key Withdrawals and Statements
- England's FA confirmed it will write to FIFA withdrawing endorsement for a fourth term.
- Wales and Serbia publicly announced their withdrawal, following Finland's lead.
- Sweden, which never offered support, will oppose Infantino's candidature in the March election.
Comparison of European FA Stances

|---|---|---|
| England | Yes | Withdrawn |
| Wales | Yes | Withdrawn |

This growing opposition creates a significant challenge for Infantino, who still plans to helm an extraordinary FIFA congress in November to confirm the UK's hosting of the 2035 Women's World Cup.
Implications for FIFA's Future
The mass withdrawal of support from key European federations could derail Infantino's re-election hopes. With the FIFA election scheduled for March, the president faces an uphill battle to retain power amid mounting governance concerns.
These developments highlight a broader demand for greater accountability and transparency in international football's governing body. Stakeholders are increasingly prioritizing ethical leadership over political alliances.
