The controversial film Satluj, directed by Honey Trehan, has been banned in India on grounds of national security, sparking a fierce debate about film censorship and democratic freedoms. Trehan, who grew up in Punjab, witnessed the devastating police crackdowns of the 1990s and sought to tell the story of activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. After years of being blocked by India's censorship board, the film was finally released on a streaming platform only to be removed within 48 hours under government orders.
What Is the Satluj Film About?
Satluj (originally titled Ghallughara) recounts the mass killings and illegal cremations carried out by Punjab police during the separatist insurgency. It centers on Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who exposed the atrocities and was later murdered. The film aims to shed light on a dark chapter in India's modern history that remains highly sensitive today.

The Role of India's Censorship Board
India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) blocked the film for over three years, citing concerns over public order and national security. Trehan describes the process as "dystopian" and accuses the Narendra Modi government of using censorship to suppress dissent. He claims that Indian cinema is increasingly being used as a propaganda tool for a rightwing, religious nationalist agenda.
