The MLS new commissioner faces a pivotal moment as the league seeks to elevate its status. With Larry Berg set to take over from Don Garber, the priorities are clear: securing a broadcast future, refining roster rules, and expanding the league's reach. This article breaks down the five key areas that will define Berg's tenure.
1. Charting a Broadcast Future
The current deal with Apple, worth $250 million annually, expires after the 2028-29 season. The partnership has brought innovation but also challenges, including limited viewership data and reduced camera coverage. Berg must decide whether to renew, renegotiate, or pivot to traditional networks.

According to recent reports, MLS broadcasts average 120,000 unique viewers per game, a figure that pales in comparison to other major leagues. The new commissioner will need to explore hybrid models that maximize reach and revenue.
2. Roster Rules and Competitive Balance
MLS's complex roster rules, including Designated Players and salary caps, are often criticized for limiting club flexibility. Berg may push for reforms that allow teams to compete globally while maintaining parity. A balance between spending and sustainability is crucial.
Key Roster Considerations
- Adjusting the salary cap to attract top talent
- Revising the Designated Player rule to encourage youth development
- Implementing new mechanisms for player transfers
3. Expanding the League's Footprint
With 30 teams and growing, expansion remains a priority. New markets in the US and Canada could boost fan engagement and media rights value. However, careful planning is needed to avoid diluting talent and competitive integrity.
4. Enhancing Fan Experience and Engagement
From stadium atmosphere to digital platforms, Berg must focus on what fans see and feel. Improving the in-game experience, increasing accessibility, and leveraging social media are vital to growing the league's fanbase.
5. Global Partnerships and Player Development
MLS has made strides in exporting talent, but more can be done. Strengthening ties with international leagues and investing in academies will help develop homegrown stars. Berg's vision will shape the league's global standing.
Comparison of Broadcast Options
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Renew with Apple | Innovation, global reach | Low viewership data, limited exposure |
| Traditional Networks | Higher viewership, established audience | Lower revenue potential |
| Hybrid Model | Balanced reach and revenue | Complex negotiations |
Key Takeaways
- Broadcast strategy is the top priority for the new commissioner.
- Roster rule reforms could reshape competitive balance.
- Expansion and fan engagement are critical for growth.
- Global partnerships will elevate the league's status.
