MPs' staff security has become a critical issue as a new survey reveals that 78% of staff received threatening communication and nearly one in three fear for their safety. The urgent need for enhanced protection is underscored by the murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe and a sharp rise in psychological distress among parliamentary workers.
Alarming Survey Results on MPs' Staff Security
A survey of over 500 MPs’ staff members, conducted by the Westminster-based wellness working group and psychologist Dr. Ashley Weinberg, found that 30% of staff frequently or always fear for their own or colleagues' safety—up from 18.7% five years ago. Additionally, 73 staffers reported being frequently exposed to racist or prejudiced language, and 188 experienced this sometimes. One in four felt pressure to comply with requests that could compromise their safety.

Physical Attacks and Threats on the Rise
Reports indicate that staff have been physically attacked and subjected to hundreds of threatening calls and messages. The murder of Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson, has prompted Prime Minister Andy Burnham to announce a review of MPs’ security. Joshua Kerry, 28, has been charged with her murder.

Call for Urgent Security Reforms
The Westminster wellness working group (WWG) states there is an “urgent” need for greater protection for frontline staff who routinely face abuse, racist and sexist language, and suicide threats. Unsustainable workloads are a major driver of distress.
While some staff say authorities have listened to their safety concerns, many feel neglected. Improved security measures—such as better screening of visitors, panic buttons, and mental health support—are essential to protect those who serve the public.
