Ofcom will not investigate GB News after presenter Bev Turner falsely claimed there was no riot in Belfast, despite burning cars, houses set alight, and families fleeing. The media regulator received over 400 complaints but ruled that Turner was expressing her own view and was challenged on air.
Ofcom's Decision on GB News Riot Claim
The incident occurred in June 2024 when violent disorder erupted in Belfast following a knife attack. Turner, hosting GB News' Late Show Live, said, "There was no riot… there is not a house that has been burnt down." Video evidence showed burning vehicles and damaged homes, yet Ofcom declined to investigate, citing that Turner's comments were opinion and she faced immediate pushback from a guest.

Why Ofcom Dismissed the Complaints
Ofcom argued that broadcasters are allowed to express personal opinions as long as they are challenged. In this case, political commentator Matthew Stadlen pointed to footage of the chaos, and Turner responded that it was "not that dramatic." The regulator stated that the segment provided due impartiality by including contrasting views.
Comparison of Ofcom's Standards vs. Public Expectations
| Ofcom's Stated Rule | Public Expectation |
|---|---|
| Opinion segments are permitted if challenged | Factual statements should be accurate, not dismissed as opinion |
| 447 complaints do not meet threshold for intervention | High volume of complaints indicates serious concern |
| Broadcaster's internal processes deemed sufficient | External accountability needed for flagrant misinformation |
Key Takeaways from the GB News Controversy

Public and Media Reaction
Campaign group Reliable Media filed a complaint, with director Richard Wilson stating, "Whether or not a house burned down is not a matter of opinion." The decision has fueled debate about media regulation in the UK, especially as GB News faces multiple other complaints.
