São Tomé and Príncipe heads to the polls in a tense presidential election on Sunday, as one of Africa’s least populous countries seeks to burnish its democratic credentials. With about 142,000 registered voters, including 15% in the diaspora, the island nation off West Africa faces a critical test of its political stability. Since independence from Portugal in 1975, it has maintained peaceful, competitive elections, but this year’s vote is marred by a constitutional crisis and internal party divisions.
Key Candidates and Political Tensions
The incumbent president, Carlos Vila Nova, is running for a second term as an independent, breaking from the ruling Acção Democrática Independente (ADI) party he represented in 2021. His rift with ADI began in January last year when he dismissed Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. The replacement, Ilza Amado Vaz, resigned after just three days, leading to current Prime Minister Américo Ramos. On Sunday, Vila Nova faces four challengers, including ADI parliamentary leader Nito D’Abreu.

Former Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus attempted to withdraw his independent candidacy but missed the deadline, remaining on the ballot. The main opposition party, Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe, now backs Vila Nova despite past opposition, while an ADI faction led by Ramos supports D’Abreu. If no candidate exceeds 50% of the vote, the election will proceed to a second round.
Disqualified Candidate and Electoral Rules
Businessman Domingos Monteiro, known as “Nino” and president of the São Toméan Football Federation since 2015, was disqualified after the constitutional court ruled he did not meet eligibility requirements. Born on the island, his parents’ background led to the court’s decision, adding to the election’s complexity.
