Schools to adapt teaching to local business needs is the core of Andy Burnham's new devolution plan aimed at tackling youth unemployment. The initiative, based on the Greater Manchester baccalaureate, will task schools in England with tailoring curriculums for students aged 14 and above to match local job markets. By blending technical skills with traditional academics, Burnham wants to value the hard hat as much as the graduation cap.
How the Plan Will Reshape School Curriculums
Under the proposal, mayors and local leaders will work with schools, colleges, and employers to design technical training built around regional employment needs. This shift aims to make technical and vocational qualifications as respected as A-levels and degrees. The government plans to prioritize funding for these pathways and instruct Ofsted to recognize their value equally.
