Social Darwinists and tech utopians have long fueled the fight against equality in America, as historian Kim Phillips-Fein reveals in her new book Country of Lords. Published amid celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the book traces a lineage from founder John Adams to modern billionaires like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel. Phillips-Fein argues that extreme economic hierarchy threatens democracy itself.
The Neo-Aristocrats and Their Ideology
Phillips-Fein’s Country of Lords examines how elites have justified inequality across centuries. From 19th-century social Darwinists like William Graham Sumner to today’s tech magnates, the belief that wealth reflects merit has persisted. She notes that Adams himself was “very ambivalent” about equality, fearing what the revolution unleashed.

From Andrew Carnegie to Elon Musk
The book connects steel magnate Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy with Musk’s rise as a trillionaire. Phillips-Fein captures the “deep discomfort, both fear and anger” surrounding such extreme wealth. Her earlier works, Invisible Hands and Fear City, established her as a leading voice on capitalism and democracy.
| Era | Key Figure | Ideology |
|---|---|---|
| 18th Century | John Adams | Ambivalent Founding Father |
| Late 19th Century | Andrew Carnegie, William Graham Sumner | Social Darwinism |
| 21st Century | Elon Musk, Peter Thiel | Tech Utopianism |
Why This Book Matters Now
With inequality at record levels, Country of Lords asks whether democracy can survive extreme concentration of wealth. Phillips-Fein explores alternative visions for a more equal society. Her work is a must-read for anyone concerned about the future of American democracy.
