Student fungus videos on faeces have taken the internet by storm, as Alfred Drummond-Herdman, a 27-year-old trainee lawyer, captures the hidden world of coprophilous fungi in stunning timelapse. His bedroom in Edinburgh is filled with terrariums and containers holding cowpats, grouse droppings, and rabbit pellets, from which brightly colored fungi emerge, viewed by millions worldwide.
The Rise of a Viral Natural History Sensation
Drummond-Herdman began his journey during the pandemic when he encountered cowpats in the Ochil Hills covered in mushrooms, which he described as "like a forest." His curiosity led him to identify the species online, sparking a deep fascination with dung-inhabiting fungi. Today, he has over 60,000 Instagram followers and has identified two new species, with more discoveries on the way.

His work is a rare glimpse into the microbial world that surrounds us, yet few ever see. By photographing fungi every 30 seconds, he creates timelapses that reveal the rapid growth and vibrant colors of species like inkcaps, fieldcaps, and ascobolus, which resemble tiny barnacles.
Why Coprophilous Fungi Matter
Coprophilous fungi play a crucial role in ecosystems by breaking down animal dung, recycling nutrients, and supporting soil health. According to Kew Gardens, at least 2 million fungi species remain undiscovered, and amateur taxonomists like Drummond-Herdman are vital in documenting biodiversity.
