Thailand School Shooting: Teen Suspect Kills 7, Injures 30 2026

Thailand school shooting: a 14-year-old suspect killed at least seven people and injured more than 30, officials say, in a tragic attack at Debsirin School in Bangkok. The incident has sparked national debate on gun control and school safety.

Details of the Thailand School Shooting

The suspect, a student at Debsirin School, first killed his grandparents at their home using a handgun belonging to his grandfather. He then traveled to the school and opened fire, targeting teachers and students. Police confirmed five teachers were shot before the suspect turned the gun on himself, sustaining a self-inflicted wound.

Amid conflicting casualty figures, police reported at least 30 injuries, with nine severely wounded. A 12-year-old girl remains in a coma with a bullet wound to the head. Health Minister Phatthana Phromphat visited Phra Nang Klao hospital, where three critical patients were admitted; two underwent surgery and are stable.

Government Response and Gun Control Proposals

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated the suspect was "under stress" and appeared to have planned the assault. He vowed to propose a new law restricting public firearm carrying, citing Thailand's high rate of private gun ownership. The country has seen several mass shootings in recent years, prompting urgent calls for reform.

The Higher Education minister donated blood at a nearby hospital and urged the public to do the same. Authorities collected evidence from the suspect's home, including computer equipment, to understand the motive and prevent future attacks.

School Safety Measures in the Wake of the Attack

Debsirin School announced all classes will be suspended from 10 to 14 August, with staff working from home. This move aims to allow students and staff to recover and for authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. Other schools across Thailand are reviewing their security protocols.

Experts recommend implementing stricter access controls, active shooter drills, and mental health support for students. The tragedy highlights the need for comprehensive school safety strategies, combining physical security with psychological intervention.

Comparison of Gun Ownership and Mass Shooting Incidents

This data underscores the correlation between gun availability and gun violence. Thailand's rate is significantly higher than many Asia-Pacific nations, yet lower than the U.S. However, recent incidents show the devastating impact even with lower rates.
