Trump warns Iran diplomacy may collapse, leading to a return of strong military action against Tehran. The US president’s latest ultimatum comes amid tense negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz and escalating Middle East instability.
Trump’s Ultimatum: Diplomacy or Military Action?
Speaking to Axios on Monday, Donald Trump stated, “We are in very deep talks with Iran. If they don’t work out, we will go back to very strong military action.” He emphasized a short timeline, saying, “Not much time. Either it goes fast or not at all.” The president repeated the warning later on Air Force One and at a rally in Michigan, doubling down on his threat to “beat the hell out of them.”

Despite the aggressive rhetoric, Trump claimed “very friendly negotiations are going on.” However, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei denied any direct talks, stating mediators may convey messages but no negotiations are currently underway.
Strait of Hormuz: The Flashpoint
The diplomatic back-and-forth centers on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments. Oman and Iran are closing in on an agreement in principle for future management of the strait, but Tehran demands a transit fee or toll for all vessels passing through, paid to a consortium led by the two countries. This demand has stalled progress.
Technical talks held in Tehran on Friday and Saturday may determine whether the region spirals into another round of conflict. China, Qatar, and Pakistan are backing the perceived progress in discussions.
Impact on Global Economy and Energy Markets
Any disruption to the Strait of Hormuz would severely impact global oil prices and energy supplies. Below is a comparison of scenarios:
| Scenario | Diplomatic Resolution | Military Escalation |
|---|---|---|
| Oil Price Impact | Stable to slight reduction | Sharp spike (20-40%) |
| Global Supply Chain | Minimal disruption | Major bottlenecks |
| Regional Stability | Improved | Heightened conflict |
