The V&A workers strike ballot over heatwave conditions and pay has raised serious concerns at one of the world's leading art and design museums. More than 300 staff across four London sites are voting on potential strike action, citing soaring temperatures and limited access to drinking water.
What Triggered the V&A Strike Ballot?
The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) launched the strike ballot on 23 July due to unresolved issues affecting staff. While pay rates are a key factor, the union has also highlighted extreme heat in work areas. Workers demand a minimum 4% pay increase and better heat mitigation measures.

Key Demands from Workers
- Closure of public areas when temperatures exceed 30°C
- Heat mitigation measures for back-of-house staff
- Permission for workers at V&A East Storehouse to carry and drink water while on duty near exhibits
- Accreditation as a London living wage employer
Comparison of Pay and Conditions
| Issue | Current Situation | Union Demand |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly pay | At least £14.80 (London living wage) | Minimum 4% increase |
| Heat policy | No formal closure policy | Close public areas above 30°C |
| Drinking water access | Limited for back-of-house staff | Allow water carrying near exhibits |
| Living wage accreditation | Under review later this year | Become accredited now |
The V&A confirms all directly employed staff receive at least the London living wage, but outsourced contractors do not. Accreditation would ensure consistent pay across all workers.
Impact on Museum Operations
If the strike goes ahead, it could disrupt visitor access and exhibitions at the South Kensington museum, V&A East, and Young V&A. The union argues that extreme heat not only harms staff but also compromises the care of collections.
This is one of the first UK workplace disputes specifically citing heatwave conditions, reflecting growing concerns about climate change and worker safety.
