F1 2026 Belgian GP: Antonelli Wins, Extends Title Lead 2026

Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix in commanding fashion, extending his Formula One championship lead to 50 points over teammate George Russell. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver delivered a cool, assured drive at Spa-Francorchamps, holding off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to secure his fourth win of the season.

The race was defined by early drama, as Russell was knocked out on the opening lap after a clash with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. The British driver was left distraught, blaming his Mercedes car's weakness for the incident. Meanwhile, Antonelli controlled the pace from the front, regaining the lead after Leclerc had jumped ahead during the pit stop phase.

Belgian Grand Prix: Key Moments and Driver Standings

The win gave Antonelli a commanding 204 points in the drivers' championship, while Hamilton sits second with 159. Russell dropped to third with 154 points, and Leclerc remains fourth with 126. The title race is now firmly in Antonelli's hands as the season approaches its midpoint.

Leclerc finished second in the race, while Hamilton received a five-second penalty for his role in the Russell collision. Max Verstappen, now driving for Red Bull, finished outside the podium positions but remains a threat in the constructors' battle.

Russell's Frustration Boils Over

After the race, Russell took aim at his Mercedes team, criticizing the car's weakness in wheel-to-wheel combat. "We need to fix this immediately," he said, as his championship hopes took another serious blow. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff defended the car's performance, noting that Antonelli's win proved the W16's pace.

What This Means for the Championship

With a 50-point lead, Antonelli is now the clear favorite for the 2026 title. His consistency and racecraft have impressed pundits, with many comparing his rise to past champions. The next race at Monza will be critical for Russell, who must close the gap or risk falling out of contention entirely.

• Antonelli leads Russell by 50 points after the Belgian GP
• Hamilton's penalty dropped him to fourth in the race but he remains second in standings
• McLaren's Norris and Piastri hold fifth and sixth respectively
• Red Bull's Verstappen is seventh with 91 points, struggling for pace
