Aigul Akhmetshina's Mujer Fatal Album Review: Classy and Sensual Music 2026

In this Aigul Akhmetshina Mujer Fatal album review, we explore the mezzo-soprano's second album, a classy and sensual journey from Bizet to Britten. Accompanied by Antonio Pappano, the album showcases Akhmetshina's versatility across Spanish, French, Russian art song, and Broadway.

Mujer Fatal Album Review: A Diverse Repertoire

The album opens with the title track by Elena Roussanova, setting a languid tone. Akhmetshina's supple voice wraps around the melodies, with Pappano's sensitive piano work drawing out delicate melismas.

Spanish and French Gems

Montsalvatge's Canciones Negras highlight her long-breathed melodies and rich lower register. Bizet's Adieux de l'hôtesse arabe and Ravel's Vocalise-étude en forme de habanera are classy and sensual, showcasing her ability to inhabit sultry characters.

Russian and Tchaikovsky

She is entirely at home in Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, and especially Tchaikovsky's None but the Lonely Heart, where her emotional depth shines.

Performance Analysis: Restrained Yet Uninhibited

While some performances are restrained, she lets loose in Bésame mucho, delivering a sensual and uninhibited rendition. Gershwin's The Man I Love and Bernstein's Lucky to be Me feel a tad strait-laced, but she warms nicely into Weill's Speak Low. The recital closes with Britten's O Tell Me the Truth About Love, a delicious party piece where she finally allows herself to have some fun.
