Andy Burnham has become the UK's first TikTok PM, using viral social media tactics to redefine political communication. His team’s strategy blends memes, influencer collaborations, and policy announcements in vertical videos, setting a new standard for modern leadership.
How Andy Burnham Is Winning TikTok
Burnham’s social media team abandoned the buttoned-up style of previous PMs. Instead, they post behind-the-scenes clips, emoji-laden replies, and Q&A sessions filmed on smartphones. This approach has drawn comparisons to New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, another politician known for his digital-first persona.

Key Takeaways from Burnham’s Strategy
- Prioritize vertical video for mobile-first platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
- Use authentic, unfiltered content over polished press releases.
- Collaborate with influencers and celebrities (e.g., Sir Mo Farah jogging video).
- Deliver policy messages in simple, catchy soundbites that cut through the noise.
- Respond to comments with emojis and memes to humanize the leader.
Why This Matters for Political Communication
Professor Andrew Chadwick of Loughborough University notes that Burnham’s “very simple, clear policy pledges” cut through because they are delivered in the same style as native TikTok content. This shift reflects a broader trend: voters increasingly expect politicians to be accessible, relatable, and digitally savvy.
Burnham’s approach also democratizes access. Instead of relying on traditional media gatekeepers, he speaks directly to millions—especially younger audiences who may have tuned out of politics. The question now is whether other leaders will follow his lead or stick to the old playbook.
