When Argentina's national football team burst into the dressing room after beating Switzerland 3-1, they celebrated by singing The Fourth Star, the country's unofficial World Cup anthem. Argentina vs England revives historic tensions rooted in the Falklands War and Diego Maradona's legendary Hand of God goal. This semi-final is far more than a game, blending politics, patriotism, and football history.
The Hand of God and the Falklands War Legacy
Almost four decades after Maradona's controversial Hand of God goal and his stunning solo strike in 1986, the rivalry between Argentina and England remains intensely charged. The 1982 Falklands War, known as the Malvinas War in Argentina, left deep scars. The sinking of the cruiser General Belgrano by British forces outside the exclusion zone killed 323 crew members, fueling Argentine resentment.

Football as a Balm for War Trauma
For many Argentines, the 1986 World Cup victory over England was a form of vindication. Aldo Leiva, a Malvinas war veteran and congressman, noted that "football has rules and referees. There was none of that in the war." The victory, especially Maradona's goals, provided emotional healing for a nation still grieving.
The Fourth Star Anthem and Modern Chants
Musician Pablo Quintana, who wrote the unofficial anthem The Fourth Star, included the line "For Malvinas, for Diego" to honor the fallen and the football legend. Quintana, born after the war, explains that these matches "are not just matches." The chant has been sung by Lionel Messi and his teammates, connecting past and present.
