Athens Suitcase Death: Suspect Admits Hiding Body, Denies Murder 2026

The Athens suitcase death case has taken a new turn as the suspect, 26-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai, admits to hiding the body of Scottish charity worker Elisabeth-Jane Ross but denies murder. Greek authorities are intensively investigating the motive behind the killing, focusing on the victim's last hours alive.

Suspect's Confession and Denial

Sharif Ahmadzai, a professional boxer and refugee from Afghanistan, has confessed to carrying Ross's body to an abandoned building and withdrawing €10,000 from ATMs using her credit cards. However, he denies any role in her death, claiming he discovered her lifeless body in an apartment he managed in the Exarchia district of Athens.

Police have CCTV footage of Ahmadzai transporting the body on the night of July 16, which contradicts his initial statement. The suspect's refusal to admit murder has led investigators to believe he is hiding crucial details about the events leading to Ross's death.

Background of the Victim and Suspect

Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a 38-year-old Scottish charity worker, had moved into the apartment on July 10 after arriving in Athens from Edinburgh. She was a friend of Ahmadzai's wife, Alaina Hall, and shared similar volunteering experience and religious views. The couple ran a refugee solidarity group called Love Every Nation, which regularly met in the same apartment.

Ahmadzai arrived in Greece as a child refugee via Lesbos during the migration crisis a decade ago. He married Hall, a US citizen and devout Christian, in 2023. The investigation has revealed that Ross had been staying with Greek friends before moving to the apartment, and her last hours are now under intense scrutiny.

Investigation Focus: Motive and Evidence

Greek police are determined to uncover the motive behind the murder, as the suspect's denial seems implausible given the evidence. The withdrawal of €10,000 from ATMs using Ross's credit cards suggests a financial motive, but investigators believe there may be more to the story.

George Kalliakmanis, honorary president of the police officers' association in Athens, stated that the homicide division is now intent on discovering the motive behind the murder. The suspect's background as a boxer and his access to the apartment where the body was found are key factors in the investigation.

Key Evidence in the Case

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

Ahmadzai was accused of intentional homicide after three days of questioning and will appear before an investigating magistrate to be formally charged on Wednesday. The legal process will determine whether the suspect's denial holds up against the mounting evidence.

Investigators are also looking into the victim's last hours alive, as they believe this holds the key to understanding why Ross was targeted. The case has drawn significant media attention due to the gruesome nature of the crime and the international connections involved.
