Athens Suitcase Death: Suspect Admits Hiding Body, Denies Murder 2026

The Athens suitcase death case has taken a dramatic turn as the suspect, 26-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai, admits to hiding the body of Scottish charity worker Elisabeth-Jane Ross but denies murder. Greek authorities are intensifying their investigation into the motive behind the killing, focusing on Ross's final hours alive.

Suspect's Confession and Denial

According to George Kalliakmanis, honorary president of the police officers' association in Athens, Ahmadzai has confessed to transporting Ross's body in a suitcase and withdrawing €10,000 from ATMs using her credit cards. However, he continues to deny any role in the actual murder, a claim that police find implausible given the evidence.

CCTV footage shows Ahmadzai carrying the suitcase on the night of July 16, and he has admitted to placing the body in an abandoned building in Exarchia. The suspect, a professional boxer, is expected to appear before an investigating magistrate on Wednesday to face formal charges of intentional homicide.

Background of the Suspect and Victim

Ahmadzai arrived in Greece as a child refugee from Afghanistan via Lesbos during the migration crisis a decade ago. He married Alaina Hall, a US citizen, in 2023, and together they ran a refugee solidarity group called Love Every Nation. Ross, a friend of Hall's with similar volunteering and religious convictions, had moved into the apartment where the group met just days before her death.

Investigators are now piecing together Ross's last hours, believing they hold the key to understanding why she was targeted. The case has drawn significant media attention, not only because of the gruesome nature of the crime but also due to the complex relationships involved.

Key Evidence and Timeline

Investigation Focuses on Motive

Police are exploring several angles, including whether robbery or a personal dispute led to the murder. The withdrawal of €10,000 from Ross's accounts suggests financial gain, but the suspect's denial of murder complicates the narrative. Kalliakmanis emphasized that the homicide division is determined to uncover the truth, as the suspect's story about discovering Ross's lifeless body appears inconsistent with the evidence.

Local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
