Brian Daubney Obituary: BBC Writer and Director Dies at 81 2026

Brian Daubney, a BBC writer and director known for his work on Tomorrow's World and Bellamy's Britain, has died at the age of 81. His career spanned decades, leaving a lasting impact on British television and beyond.

Early Life and Education

Born in Redcar, North Yorkshire, Brian faced early adversity when his father passed away when he was just 18 months old. His mother later married Ron Daubney, who adopted Brian. He attended Nottingham High School and read English at St Catherine's College, Oxford, where he directed the first performance of Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Career at the BBC

Brian joined the BBC's Midlands region current affairs department in 1967, moving to BBC1's general features group in 1968. He wrote and researched the documentary series Cause for Concern before joining the science and features department in 1969. Over the next six years, he was responsible for more than 30 films for Tomorrow's World, as well as directing the first series of Pets and Vets and Bellamy's Britain.

His work on Tomorrow's World often put him in dangerous situations. He fell 40ft down a ladder on the Aust Pylons, collapsed after inhaling aero fuel fumes on a supertanker, and dropped from the tail of a Hercules aircraft at Boscombe Down. These incidents highlighted his dedication to bringing science to life for viewers.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1975, Brian left the BBC to establish Impart, a communications consultancy. Through Impart, he worked with corporate clients and became deeply involved with Wilton's Music Hall in east London. He fought to save the historic building from demolition, promoting it through talks and lectures, and managing lettings to film companies.

Brian was described as a brilliant communicator with a rare talent for instilling confidence in others. His quiet, unassuming manner made him a beloved figure among colleagues and friends.
