Four Walls and a Roof Review: Brecht, Red Scare, and Today's Émigrés 2026

In the compelling stage production Four Walls and a Roof, the story of Bertolt Brecht's exile under the Red Scare becomes a mirror for today's émigrés. This review explores how Lebanese artists Lina Majdalanie and Rabih Mroué use Brecht's life to question place and identity in a world still marked by political displacement.

Brecht's Cold Execution and the Red Scare

Bertolt Brecht termed it “cold execution” – the US government's method, during the House Un-American Activities Committee (Huac) era, of destroying opponents not by bullets but by cutting them off from their livelihood. Blacklisted artists in Hollywood faced this fate, unable to work or create. The play draws a direct line from this historical moment to contemporary experiences of exile.

The Playwright's Journey into Exile

Brecht fled Germany after the Reichstag fire in 1933, spending eight years crossing multiple countries before reaching the US. The production wryly notes that returning to Europe after being questioned for communist ties took only a day. This contrast highlights the precarious nature of asylum and belonging.

Parallels to Today's Émigrés

Majdalanie and Mroué, themselves émigrés from Beirut to Berlin, bring personal urgency to the theme. They ask: what does homeland truly mean? More than four walls and a roof, it is a web of relationships, language, and history. The Huac's demand for yes-or-no certainty echoes today's political polarisation, where nuance is often lost.

An Absorbing Illustrated Lecture with Music

The production is an absorbing illustrated lecture, with pianist Henrik Kairies singing Brecht and Hanns Eisler's songs. The casual, un-actorly reading of the script invites the audience into a shared reflection on how history repeats itself.

Key Takeaways from the Review

• Brecht's exile under the Red Scare resonates with modern displacement.
• The production uses Brecht's story to question identity and homeland.
• Music and illustration enhance the narrative's emotional impact.
• Historical parallels with today's far-right rise are unmistakable.
