Israeli ministers have announced plans for new illegal settlements in Gaza and the West Bank, escalating tensions in the occupied Palestinian territories. With national elections approaching, the far-right coalition is racing to expand control and displace Palestinians.
Overview of the Settlement Plans
Defense Minister Israel Katz intends to establish three Nahal outposts in northern Gaza, a type of military community that historically precedes civilian settlements. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich revealed 1.3 billion shekels in funding for dozens of new settlements in the occupied West Bank. The cabinet allocated the money last month but kept it secret due to expected US opposition.
