The collection includes works by friends from the Scratch Orchestra era, such as John Lely's hypnotic Sycamore and Mark R Taylor's pensive nocturnes. Each piece reflects Tilbury's extraordinary sensitivity to sound.
Highlights from the Four-Disc Set
Among the standout tracks is For Samuel Beckett, an improvisation with pianist Sebastian Lexer from a 2005 concert. It is arguably the most beautiful piece in the box. Another gem is Dave Smith's Al Contrario, a contrapuntal fantasy honoring Charles-Valentin Alkan.
Quirky contributions include Guillaume de Machaut arranged by Kurtág and an extraordinary recording of Swiss dust particles combined with inside-piano improvisation. The sea-air-weathered clavichord adds a unique, plinkety-plonk tuning to pieces like Christopher Hobbs' Five Pieces.
