Keir Starmer has endorsed a Fifa investigation into Argentina players who held a Falklands banner after their World Cup semi-final win against England. The banner read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” reigniting the long-standing territorial dispute over the Falkland Islands. Downing Street confirmed that Starmer supports business secretary Peter Kyle’s call for Fifa to probe whether political activity breached tournament rules.
What Happened After the Argentina vs. England Match?
Following Argentina’s 2-1 victory in Atlanta on Wednesday, several players displayed a banner asserting Argentina’s claim to the Falklands, known in Spanish as the Malvinas. The incident occurred during an already tense match, and the banner quickly drew political attention. Starmer, who watched the game while traveling to Ukraine, backed Kyle’s demand for a Fifa investigation into the matter.

Why Is This a Violation of World Cup Rules?
Fifa’s disciplinary code prohibits political statements at the World Cup. Peter Kyle called the banner “an egregious violation” of the rule separating politics from football. The Falklands banner controversy has sparked debate about how strictly these rules should be enforced, especially given the sensitive history of the islands.

Political Reactions and Sovereignty Claims
Starmer’s spokesperson emphasized that “self-determination rests with the islanders” and that the UK’s commitment to the Falklands “will never waver.” The prime minister’s stance aligns with longstanding British policy. Meanwhile, Argentina’s claim to the islands remains a central issue in bilateral relations. The Falklands banner incident has amplified these tensions on a global stage.
Previous Fifa Bans for Political Statements
In 2024, Spain players Rodri and Álvaro Morata were banned for one match for political gestures. This precedent suggests that the Fifa investigation into the Argentina players could result in similar sanctions. The case highlights the challenge of maintaining neutrality in international sports.
