Kit Harington has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO's Harry Potter television series, replacing Nicholas Hoult due to scheduling conflicts. The announcement marks a significant shift for the highly anticipated adaptation of J.K. Rowling's beloved books.
Why Nicholas Hoult Left the Harry Potter Series
Nicholas Hoult, known for his role as Lex Luthor in the recent Superman film, was initially confirmed for the part just two weeks ago. However, scheduling conflicts with his other commitments forced him to step away from the production. HBO quickly moved to secure a replacement, tapping Harington, who brings his own star power from Game of Thrones.

Kit Harington's Connection to the Wizarding World
Harington is no stranger to the Harry Potter universe. He voiced Lockhart in Audible's full-cast adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, released in 2025. In a recent interview with Collider, Harington expressed his excitement: "I've said a million times, for anyone who cares, that I'm a huge Potter fan. He's one of my favourite characters. So, to be offered to play him is a real dream."
What to Expect from Gilderoy Lockhart
Lockhart is the vain and inept Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in the second novel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harington's portrayal is expected to capture the character's charm and comedic flaws. "I think he's going to be so fun," Harington added, hinting at a performance that balances humor with the character's signature arrogance.
