Pakistani Grooming Gang Suspect Refuses UK Return Date 2026

The Pakistani grooming gang suspect Rukhsar Ahmed has reportedly declined to specify when he will return to the UK to face rape charges, raising fresh concerns about bail enforcement and cross-border justice. Ahmed, a former Pakistan state minister, was arrested at Manchester airport in July 2024 on suspicion of raping and trafficking at least two underage girls from care homes in Manchester's Rusholme area during the 1990s. He was released on bail but flew to Pakistan nearly two months ago, missing a police appointment after claiming illness.

Who is Rukhsar Ahmed?

Rukhsar Ahmed, 55, is a politician who served in various state government roles from 2006 until recently. He was re-elected as an MP for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the party of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, just days after missing his UK bail appointment. His dual status as a UK-based suspect and a Pakistani lawmaker has created a diplomatic and legal dilemma.

Allegations and Legal Status

Ahmed faces allegations of rape and trafficking of minors, which he categorically denies. In a Facebook statement, he said: "I categorically deny all the allegations against me and will address these matters through the appropriate forums. On legal advice, I will not comment further while these matters remain ongoing." Despite being released on bail, he has not returned to the UK, and his legal team in Manchester and London reportedly advised him not to discuss the case publicly.

Bail Conditions and International Jurisdiction

The case highlights the challenges of enforcing bail conditions when a suspect flees to another country. UK authorities have limited options, but extradition treaties and diplomatic pressure may play a role. Ahmed told reporters he would return to Britain to meet his bail conditions but declined to give a date, saying: "Everything is with my legal team in Manchester and London, they told me I can't discuss this."

Key Takeaways

• Rukhsar Ahmed remains a fugitive from UK bail conditions.
• He was re-elected as an MP in Pakistan, complicating extradition.
• The case raises questions about cross-border justice for grooming gang suspects.
• Victims' families demand accountability and transparency.

Reactions and Next Steps

The Guardian's investigation has sparked public outrage in the UK, with calls for stricter bail conditions and better monitoring of suspects with international ties. Meanwhile, Ahmed's refusal to answer direct questions about the rape allegations has fueled speculation. When asked directly, he replied: "You are doing wrong now, I told you not to talk to me like this … please don't talk to me like this, I told you I have nothing to do with it, OK."

Legal experts note that while Ahmed has not been convicted or formally charged, the severity of the allegations and his evasion of bail obligations may prompt UK authorities to seek an extradition request. However, Pakistan's political landscape could complicate such efforts, as Ahmed holds a parliamentary seat.
