In the latest Premier League news, Andoni Iraola has publicly valued Florian Wirtz's work ethic, insisting the Liverpool midfielder should be judged by his overall impact rather than statistics. Meanwhile, David Moyes has backed Jack Grealish, calling him a 'senior citizen' whose experience remains crucial. These stories highlight the ongoing narratives in England's top flight.
Iraola: Wirtz's Worth 'Not All About Statistics'
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has defended Liverpool's £116m summer signing Florian Wirtz, emphasizing that the German international's contributions go beyond goals and assists. Wirtz impressed in Liverpool's Champions League victory over Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, but has faced criticism for conceding possession and managing just one assist and no goals in the Premier League so far.

"Flo played very well against Atlético Madrid and I also think he has been unlucky," Iraola said. "I remember the 'goal' he scored against Nottingham Forest; they gave it live and then VAR disallowed it. He could have had very good assists but we haven't finished them. That is why you cannot just play because of the numbers."
Iraola's comments underline a growing debate in modern football: the overreliance on data. "Whether a striker scores a lot of goals or he doesn't, you have to look at the performances. Does he help us to play well? Yes. Well, someone will score the goals and someone will give the assists. I am not too focused on numbers," he added.
Wirtz's Statistical Comparison
Despite the lack of goal contributions, Wirtz's underlying numbers reveal a different story. His expected assists (xA) and key passes per 90 minutes rank among the top in the league, suggesting his teammates have been wasteful. The table below compares his Premier League stats to his Champions League performances.
| Metric | Premier League | Champions League |
|---|---|---|
| Goals | 0 | 0 |
| Assists | 1 | 2 |
| Key Passes per 90 | 2.5 | 3.1 |
| Expected Assists (xA) | 2.8 | 3.5 |
| Possession Lost per 90 | 12.3 | 10.8 |
The data shows Wirtz is creating chances, but his teammates' finishing and VAR decisions have cost him tangible returns. Iraola's point is clear: Wirtz's value lies in his ability to elevate Liverpool's attacking play, not just in the box score.
Moyes Backs 'Senior Citizen' Grealish
In other Premier League news, David Moyes has come to the defense of Jack Grealish, referring to him as a 'senior citizen' whose experience is invaluable. Grealish, 29, has faced scrutiny over his form and consistency since his £100m move to Manchester City, but Moyes believes his maturity and leadership are assets.
"Jack is a senior citizen now in football terms," Moyes said. "He has been through it all and knows what it takes to win. His experience is crucial for the younger players." Grealish has struggled for regular starts this season, but his performances off the bench have shown glimpses of his quality.
Grealish's Role and Impact
Grealish's ability to draw fouls and retain possession remains elite, but his goal contributions have dipped. Moyes' comments suggest that Grealish's value extends beyond statistics, much like Iraola's defense of Wirtz. Both managers emphasize the intangible qualities that don't appear on the scoresheet.
Key Takeaways
- Iraola insists Wirtz's impact should be measured by performances, not just goals and assists.
- Wirtz's expected assists (xA) indicate he has been unlucky not to register more goal contributions.
- Moyes backs Grealish, calling him a 'senior citizen' whose experience is vital.
- Both cases highlight the limitations of judging players solely on statistics.
