R Kelly has formally appealed to President Donald Trump to commute his 31-year prison sentence for racketeering, sex trafficking, and child abuse images, according to a filing made public this week. The 59-year-old R&B singer, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, was convicted in 2021 for leading a criminal enterprise that recruited women and underage girls for illegal sexual activity. He is currently serving his sentence at a North Carolina federal prison, with a release date not expected until January 2046.
Details of the Commutation Request
The request for commutation was filed through the Office of the Pardon Attorney and is listed as "pending". Kelly's lawyer, Beau Brindley, has been publicly lobbying Trump for over a year, arguing that the singer's life is in danger behind bars. In 2025, Brindley filed an emergency motion seeking Kelly's immediate release to home detention, alleging a plot by prison officials to have a terminally ill inmate kill Kelly in exchange for early release. The motion was denied.

Kelly's legal team claims that the singer faces corruption and threats within the prison system. Brindley stated, "The only thing that can protect Mr Kelly behind the prison walls now is the fact that now the world is watching." Kelly has repeatedly denied all allegations against him.
