The Strokes' Reality Awaits marks a triumphant return, blending the band's signature minimalism with the experimental energy of Julian Casablancas's side project, the Voidz. This seventh album and first in six years is a perfect marriage of mayhem and melody, arguably their best work in over a decade.
The Voidz Influence on Reality Awaits
To understand Reality Awaits, you must first understand the Voidz. Casablancas’s other band has evolved from a divisive prog-rock experiment into a playground for his most energetic and goofy ideas. Tracks like “Going to Babble On” showcase his warbling Auto-Tune and absurd lyrics about John Legend and Josh Groban, all set to an old-timey Strokes melody. This blend of crackpot strangeness and pop sensibility is what makes the album so compelling.
