Trump addressed a rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Friday, three months after an armed assailant attempted to storm the original event. The gathering, now held at the Waldorf Astoria, marks a significant moment in the ongoing tension between the administration and the press.
The Rescheduled Dinner and Its Symbolism
Organizers and Trump himself framed the appearance as an act of defiance, reaffirming free speech under the First Amendment. WHCA president Weijia Jiang called it “a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence.”

However, the downsized venue and heightened security reflect the gravity of the original incident. The dinner was moved from the Washington Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria—formerly the Trump International hotel—adding a layer of irony to the event.
Press Freedom Groups Condemn Hypocrisy
A letter signed by 520 journalists from eight media campaign groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists, condemned the dinner as “hypocritical.” They urged the WHCA to confront Trump over his administration’s attacks on the media, such as subpoenas demanding phone records of New York Times reporters and threats to revoke broadcast licenses.
The letter states: “We believe it is hypocritical to celebrate the first amendment in front of the man who relentlessly attacks it.”
