Reform UK Donations Inquiry Sparks 'Establishment Stitch-Up' 2026

The Reform UK donations inquiry has taken a dramatic turn as party councillors are instructed to label the Metropolitan police investigation an 'establishment stitch-up'. New polling reveals Nigel Farage’s popularity has plunged to its lowest level in a decade, with only 22% holding a positive view. The controversy centers on £500,000 in donations from Fiona Cottrell, mother of convicted fraudster 'Posh George' Cottrell, and a separate £5m gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.

Background of the Reform UK Donations Inquiry

The Metropolitan police are investigating donations worth £500,000 made to Reform UK by Fiona Cottrell. Internal briefing documents leaked to The Times show councillors were told to respond with: “It is now clear that the establishment will try anything to stop us.” The party’s local representatives were also instructed to claim that “the British people are tired of the establishment media doing anything they can to stop Reform.”

This strategy comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Nigel Farage’s financial ties. The Guardian revealed in April that Farage received a £5m gift from Christopher Harborne, a crypto billionaire, before the last election. The Conservatives have asked HMRC to investigate whether tax was due on that gift, while a separate parliamentary standards inquiry examines allegations that Farage breached rules by being supported by Cottrell.

Polling Data: Farage’s Plummeting Popularity

YouGov polling shows Nigel Farage’s net favourability rating has fallen to -46, tied with Boris Johnson’s low after the first ‘partygate’ revelations and Keir Starmer just before his resignation. Only 22% of Britons view Farage positively, while 68% see him negatively. Reform UK’s overall popularity has also declined, challenging the party’s momentum ahead of the next general election.
