Pennsylvania has requested emergency assistance from the CDC to combat a severe measles outbreak that is spreading across the state. The request comes as state health officials clash with federal authorities over the reporting of measles-associated deaths.

Pennsylvania Requests CDC Epi-Aid

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has initiated a request for a CDC Epi-Aid, a type of emergency support that provides expert epidemiological assistance during disease outbreaks. According to a letter reviewed by the Guardian, Health Secretary Debra Bogen sent the request to CDC Director Erica Schwartz on Wednesday.

However, Bogen warned that the state may withdraw its request if the CDC does not publicly acknowledge four measles-associated deaths reported by Pennsylvania. "The CDC's choice not to publicly recognize the deaths undermines our response," Bogen wrote. "For this reason, if CDC is unable to transparently and accurately communicate information about those measles-associated deaths, the department will respectfully rescind our request for a CDC Epi-Aid."

Dispute Over Measles Deaths

The development is part of an ongoing dispute between Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over the state's handling of the outbreak and how measles-related deaths are counted. Kennedy has questioned whether deaths linked to measles outbreaks since he took office were caused by the virus or by another condition. He also instructed the CDC not to include Pennsylvania's reported deaths in its official tally.

This disagreement highlights the challenges of coordinating public health responses during a major outbreak. Accurate data is critical for tracking the spread of measles and implementing effective control measures.

Measles: Symptoms and Risks

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Characteristic red rash that starts on the face and spreads downward

Complications can include ear infections, pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and even death. The measles vaccine is highly effective at preventing the disease.

Vaccine Effectiveness and Herd Immunity

The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is the best protection against measles. Two doses of the vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles, while one dose is about 93% effective. Maintaining high vaccination rates is essential to achieve herd immunity, which protects those who cannot be vaccinated, such as infants and individuals with certain medical conditions.

Two doses 97%
No vaccine 0%

Key Takeaways

  • Pennsylvania is seeking CDC emergency aid to control a measles outbreak.
  • The state may withdraw its request if the CDC does not acknowledge four measles-associated deaths.
  • Measles is highly contagious but preventable with the MMR vaccine.
  • Vaccination is critical for individual and community protection.
