The US-Saudi nuclear deal represents a pivotal shift in global energy and nonproliferation policy, potentially allowing the kingdom to enrich uranium domestically. Signed on Wednesday by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the agreement includes a peaceful nuclear cooperation pact and bilateral safeguards. While full details remain undisclosed, the timing has sparked debate given ongoing US tensions with Iran over its enrichment activities.
What the Landmark US-Saudi Nuclear Deal Entails
The deal, years in the making under both Trump and Biden administrations, aims to provide Saudi Arabia with civil nuclear technology. Critics warn it could offer a path to nuclear weapons, especially since Riyadh has stated it would seek a bomb if Iran develops one. The agreement now heads to Congress, where lawmakers may push for stricter monitoring.

Key Provisions and Safeguards
Under the 123 Agreement, Saudi Arabia would gain access to US nuclear technology for energy production. However, the bilateral safeguards agreement is designed to prevent diversion of materials for military use. The US fears losing influence to China or Russia if it fails to meet Riyadh's demands.
Comparison: US vs. Potential Saudi Nuclear Partners
| Aspect | US Deal | Chinese/Russian Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Proliferation safeguards | Strict, with congressional oversight | Less stringent; no public accountability |
| Enrichment rights | Conditional, subject to monitoring | Likely unrestricted |
| Geopolitical impact | Strengthens US-Saudi alliance | Shifts power to rivals |
Implications for Global Security and Energy Markets
This uranium enrichment provision could reshape Middle East dynamics. If Saudi Arabia enriches uranium, it may trigger a regional arms race. Conversely, the deal promotes civilian nuclear energy, reducing oil dependency. The US administration argues it is essential to re-establish American leadership in nuclear cooperation.
