Miatta Fahnbulleh, the newly appointed UK energy secretary, faces a critical decision on North Sea drilling that could define her tenure. The radical economist and MP for Peckham is already under pressure from climate protesters to halt new fossil fuel projects, particularly at Jackdaw and Rosebank fields.
The Drilling Dilemma at Jackdaw and Rosebank
These two fields off the northeast coast of Scotland are not covered by Labour's ban on new North Sea drilling licences because applications were already underway. A government decision has been long trailed, and Fahnbulleh must now weigh economic arguments against climate pledges. Her predecessor, Ed Miliband, described the Rosebank licence as “climate vandalism.”

Comparing Energy Sources
| Energy Source | Carbon Intensity (gCO2/kWh) | UK Capacity Factor |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore Wind | 12 | 40% |
| New Gas (Jackdaw) | 490 | 85% |
| Solar PV | 45 | 12% |
The table shows the stark difference in emissions between renewables and fossil fuels. Fahnbulleh has the intellect and knowledge to challenge claims that new drilling boosts energy resilience.
Protesters and Political Pressure
Fossil Free London activists met her outside the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) dressed as firefighters, demanding an end to all new drilling. The science is clear: burning existing reserves will blow the global carbon budget. Tessa Khan of campaign group Uplift emphasized this reality.
Key Takeaways
- Miatta Fahnbulleh is a radical economist with a strong climate record.
- The Jackdaw and Rosebank decisions are her first major test.
- Approving new drilling would contradict net zero goals.
- Protests are likely to intensify regardless of her choice.
