Discover five free art shows that offer explosions of colour, cold war paranoia, and hyper-erotic intimacy. From Gabriel Orozco's fragmented memories to Mary Ramsden's vibrant canvases, these exhibitions provide a diverse and thought-provoking experience for art enthusiasts.

Gabriel Orozco: Chronotopic – A Journey Through Fragmented Memories

Walking into Gabriel Orozco's show is like waking up with a headache and trying to piece together whatever the hell you did last night. Everything in the Mexican conceptualist's exhibition is splintered, disjointed, a history you can't make sense of. There's a round of applause as you walk in, but the ovation morphs into the sound of rain. There are recognisable things here – cars, a football, cigarettes – but they don't make sense. They're suspended mid-air, broken into pieces, flipped upside down. An old Citroën has been split in half and glued back together too small, too narrow. There are kids' toys and games, ceiling fans twirling with rolls of toilet paper attached to their blades, tree branches that have sprouted cigarette butts. So many artists deal with the idea of memory and the passing of time, but few manage to capture the slipperiness of it all like Gabriel Orozco. The whole show feels as if it's about history, but stripped of its big names and important dates, leaving behind a bunch of fragmented memories instead. It's all a bit too ephemeral, dense and self-satisfied, as if he can't stop patting himself on the back for being so clever. But that doesn't mean it isn't good, it's just odd, discomfiting art that makes you feel you're about to forget your pin number. • White Cube Bermondsey, London, until 8 November

Mary Ramsden: The Colour Explosion

Mary Ramsden's exhibition is a burst of colour and energy that immediately lifts the spirits. Her large-scale abstract paintings are filled with bold brushstrokes and vibrant hues, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity. Ramsden's work often explores the intersection of digital and physical realms, and this show is no exception. The paintings seem to pulsate with life, drawing the viewer into a world of pure sensation. It's a refreshing contrast to Orozco's more cerebral approach, offering a more immediate and visceral experience.

Cold War Paranoia: A Retrospective

This group show examines the pervasive anxiety of the Cold War era through a collection of works by artists from both sides of the Iron Curtain. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, and archival materials that reflect the fear, propaganda, and paranoia of the time. It's a sobering reminder of how political tensions can permeate every aspect of culture. The show is thoughtfully curated, drawing parallels between historical events and contemporary issues, making it relevant to today's audience.

Hyper-Erotic Intimacy: Bodies in Dialogue

This provocative exhibition explores themes of desire, intimacy, and the body. Featuring works by a diverse group of contemporary artists, the show challenges traditional representations of sexuality and gender. Through photography, video, and installation, the artists invite viewers to reconsider their own assumptions about intimacy and connection. It's a bold and unapologetic look at human relationships, sure to spark conversation.
